I’m going to speak here primarily about Wordpress themes since Wordpress is the platform I use and understand the most. When I first started, I didn’t know anything about what made a theme effective and impressionable to my readers. No really, I am not kidding. The first version of my Informant Zone theme had the look and feel of Miami Vice. Yes, the color scheme was pink and teal.

Despite my blog reaching a Google page rank of 4 with the Miami Vice theme, I wasn’t retaining long term readers. Gee, I wonder why. So it was high time I learned a thing or two of what a successful blog design was composed of and here is what I came up with.

The overuse of banners and Adsense creates a very stressful overall feel and look. Blogs which appear to have more advertising than content tend to perform very poorly. The point of a blog is to remain focused on content. That is why I read other blogs. To find out information that I wish to know about – not to look at advertising.

3 column theme designs really need to be used with caution otherwise they make a blog look cluttered. Used correctly though they can be effective. I haven’t seen many instances of this though. The John Chow.com theme works well because the 3 columns only appear on the front page while the posts are reduced to 2 columns.

You do not necessarily need tons of flash graphics (or any types of graphics for that matter) on your site to gain attention. I personally steer away from going to sites with tons of graphics period. Some of the most successful blogs out there use very minimal graphics at best. Sites loaded with art (unless you are a site based on art) tend to load slow and not rank so well with search engines.

Do not be gadget happy. Adding things like a Google page rank checker, world clock and other interactive widgets only reduces the attention paid to your content. After all, you are writing your content to have it noticed aren’t you?

Plugins such as Top Commentators, Related Posts, Popular Posts and social bookmarking buttons all add to your blog’s sociability. So use them and make it interactive and known. The SexyBookmarks Wordpress plugin can provide you with buttons such as the ones I have at the bottom of your articles.

Color schemes come in a wide variety and no Wordpress theme is worse than one with a wide variety of colors. Try to keep it to a minimum of 2, 3 if you really have to and can incorporate the third color wisely. Unless your blog is meant to showcase the opening introductions of each season of In Living Color, I suggest you stay away from a myriad of colors. Oh and don’t go with the Miami Vice colors either!

Try to at least have your subscribe to RSS icon in a prominently visible position for everyone to see. If I can’t find the icon quickly, I don’t bother subscribing.

Music that plays immediately when a visitor arrives at your blog is annoying. I don’t even recommend doing it even if you provide a “mute” option. Only enable music on your site if it does not automatically play when someone loads the page but rather allows them to turn it on from a small noticeable panel if you really must have it on your blog. I tried adding the Miami Vice sound track to my first blog and other than the Phil Collins song “In The Air Tonight” my readers were up in arms.

With this information in mind, I hope you are able to use it to your advantage and build a more functional blog. Just remember that people like clean and structured looking blogs. Blog readers tend to surf fast and if they cannot find what they are searching for in a timely manner, they leave. Since I made some tweaks to my own blog, I noticed that the time spent on each of my pages increased substantially.

I’m sure if you’ve been around any type of marketing in your life you’ve likely heard of this term. If you read my post from yesterday and my “About” page, you will see exactly that is what I did. I did already have an elevator pitch for my blog however it was all wrong and needed some rethinking once I became aware of the definition.

As defined by Wikipedia – “An elevator pitch is an overview of an idea for a product, service, or project. The name reflects the fact that an elevator pitch should be possible to deliver in the time span of an elevator ride, meaning in a maximum of 30 seconds and in 130 words or fewer

The term is typically used in the context of an entrepreneur pitching an idea to a venture capitalist or angel investor to receive funding. Venture capitalists often judge the quality of an idea and team on the basis of the quality of its elevator pitch, and will ask entrepreneurs for the elevator pitches to quickly weed out bad ideas and weak teams.”

While an elevator pitch may not single handedly turn all first time visitors into long term readers, it will help out your conversion rate drastically.

Points To Be Aware Of When Writing Your Elevator Pitch

Be crystal clear on what your product, project or service is.

What is your personal story? What are you about and why are you doing what you’re doing?

How will it benefit your reader? What is the value in what you’re presenting?

Please note that an elevator pitch does not need to be 130 words and can have shorter variations. In some instances, you may find that a one line phrase is more suitable.

My Examples

“Monetize Zone provides solid information on maximizing your blog’s revenue. It focuses specifically on helping you build a structurally engineered foundation for your blog and online money making ventures. The techniques explained and utilized by Monetize Zone ensure that you will ultimately have a highly successful online money making experience for the long run.”

“Empowering bloggers with successful blogging techniques”

The point of doing this entire exercise is to get your point across to the reader instantly – from the moment they lay their eyes on your blog. After they leave, if your elevator pitch was effective, it will leave an impression on them not allowing them to forget about you and move onto the next page. Make it memorable!

Every so often I like to write a personal note on my blog just to let you know I’m human like everyone else. I feel that it is very important to connect with my readers on a personal level. I believe this due to the fact that I am attempting to show you my journey through the world of blogging and how to make money doing it.

I had to start from the ground up like everyone else. While I am not 5+ years into it like most professional bloggers, I can safely say that I am using this to my advantage as I am trying to better relate myself to the newcomers of the industry more so than the other professionals out there.

I blog because I like the internet, I love technology and most importantly I have a knack for research and teaching. Yes, researching and developing techniques to maximize profit potential on the internet is something I find fun. Plus it also allows me to sit here and drink unlimited amounts of coffee.

What Is The Core Purpose Of Monetize Zone?

With that in mind, my dream is to turn this blog into the center of conversation of all bloggers looking to make their living online. It is a viable goal to achieve and we need the most fortified community of knowledge we can get. That said, I really do encourage you to leave comments and ideas on each post as this source of free information will ultimately benefit all of us.

I am always on the lookout for Wordpress plugins that will make my blogging life easier as well as make my blog more interactive and user friendly. I have found through trial and error that many of the plugins simply do not work anymore as intended and some just plain suck despite the great description given to them.

As a result of my many hours spent on refining my Wordpress plugin list, I believe now that I have a very optimal setup which would be extremely useful for any blogger.

jQuery Lightbox – This plugin is used to darken the rest of your screen and bring the photo to the front. It enables the user to stay on the same page while viewing large versions of photos unlike being taken to another page using just the standard Wordpress method.

Add LightBox And Title – This is the easy way to add the rel=”lightbox[POST-ID]” tag to all of your photos automatically.

Akismet – Takes care of spam for you and should already come with Wordpress

All-In-One SEO Pack – Does provide in-depth SEO options however for those not too adept with SEO it also works great right out of the box. When writing your articles it provides a window down in the bottom to enter some SEO information.

FeedBurner FeedSmith – If you have a FeedBurner account I suggest you have this plugin. It will detect all ways to access your original Wordpress feed and redirect them to your FeedBurner feed allowing it to track all possible subscribers.

Google XML Sitemaps – Creates a sitemap file for your site which makes it easier for Google to better index your site.

Max Banner Ads – Exceptional free program for managing all of your ads. Allows you to place banners and ads virtually anywhere you please on your blog. It also displays statistics such as impressions, clicks and click through rate (CTR). It also automatically centers ads in your widgets which many other ad managers do not offer.

StatPress Reloaded – Great real time traffic stat system. Your traffic stats are displayed in a clean bar chart manner.

Twitter Tools – Updates your Twitter page anytime you publish an article. Great for driving traffic to your site or promoting affiliate products.

Twitter Tools Su.pr Links – Used in conjunction with Twitter Tools and utilizes the Su.pr URL shortening service. I like it because Su.pr keeps track of your views, clicks and stumbles as well as makes your page available to other Stumble Upon users.

Ultimate Google Analytics – Automatically adds the Google Analytics code to all applicable places within your blog template pages. All you do is add your Account ID

Quick Adsense – I prefer to use this for my Google Adsense ads as it seems to have more flexibility for them rather than using Max Banner Ads. It may also be used for ads other than Google Adsense.

Sexy Bookmarks – Has options to add any of the popular bookmarking site buttons to your posts which is important for spreading the word!

Subscribe To Comments – Allows readers to receive notifications of new comments posted to an article.

Top Commentators Widget – Rewards your readers for commenting on your blog. Not only is their name display in a prominent place, but also their hyperlinked name is a “do follow” link.

Wordpress Related Posts – Displays as many related posts as you like located at the bottom of each article. This lets new readers discover your previous work and also keeps people on your site longer.

So I decided I would add the Google Adsense 300×250 text blocks into the midst of my posted articles. Naturally, after I had set this all up I started to look through my posts just to see how the Adsense ads looked and what they contained. I noticed a few of the ads were not really related to what my blog is about – which is of course making money online.

I thought this can’t be right and possibly there was an option I overlooked when setting up the Adsense ad. I couldn’t see anything wrong with the ad options I picked so I started to look around for answers.

What I found out is that you can add tags to certain areas of the text in your post to make sure that Google Adsense delivers ads based on just that sectioned off area of text.

Example:

<!-google_ad_section_start->
This is the section of content Google uses when delivering ads for my page. You should keep this area filled with key words and phrases directed towards the theme of your blog.
<!-google_ad_section_end->

Adversely, your other option is to use the <!-google_ad_section_start(weight=ignore)-> tag on areas of your site that you wish for Google to ignore keeping your Adsense ads targeted to what your blog is about. I prefer the latter method however both work just as well.

Make sure you check your site over for this problem as you could be missing out on revenue caused by miss-targeted ads.

It happens to the best of us. You sit down in front of your computer to update your blog and your brain shuts down. You all of a sudden feel speechless and have nothing to write about. Well don’t worry because I will share with you five things that I do when the words just won’t come out.

I use a little secret application provided by Google called Google Alerts. Basically what it does is email me updates on the latest news based on the keywords I give to it. This news it literally sent to me as-it-happens. If a headline catches my fancy, I go and read about it, research what I find necessary to understand the subject and form my conclusion. It gives me good relevant and fresh material to blog about!

I look back into my older posts to see if anything needs updating or expanding upon. The internet world does evolve rapidly and the commodore 64 is not in style anymore.

Check your comments. Many times your readers will give you ideas for your next blog article.

Check the comments in other similar blogs. Quite often, the readers of other blogs will have questions that need answering. Take those questions and answer them over at your blog. Readers like people who are problem solvers to use that to your advantage.

Post an interesting related video. We all like to watch a video every now and again. But make sure to add you description to it so that your RSS readers won’t just see a large white space in the feed. They will see the description and must visit your blog to view the video. I talk more about this in another post I did on RSS subscribers.

Another little trick I use is that I generally like to write 3-5 articles at a time. I find that when I am in the swing of things, pumping out the content is easy so why not do it!

Tip: Do not blog if you truly have nothing to blog about! It will come across as sounding forced and readers do not appreciate that!

Having an RSS feed has its ups and downs and deciding what to do with it can be tricky. I hope my pointers are able to help you out with determining what is best for your blog as I have gone through a lot of trial and error figuring this out.

RSS Monetization Versus Blog Monetization

It is more difficult to monetize an RSS feed since there are less options out there to aid you in doing so. What if your site had 10,000 RSS readers out of a total of 12,000 daily readers? That would mean that only 2,000 readers are actually coming to your site. Since an RSS feed is harder to monetize than a blog, you’ll be damned if you make much money.

Some Ways To Monetize Your Feed

Automated Feed Advertising Programs – Google Adsense for Feeds is likely the most popular example out there when it comes to this. Extremely hassle free and ensures fresh ad exposure through banner rotation.

Negotiating Private Ad Sales – You will likely need a ton of RSS readers to attract this type of advertising. This is basically directly selling ad space in your feed. Could be a hassle in my opinion dealing with ad contract expiration dates and time consuming renegotiating new ad sales.

Manually Inlay Affiliate Links – This means banners or contextual links. Contextual links will likely have a better conversion rate over banners. Good way to enter the realm of RSS monetization if you know what you’re doing with this and have the proper affiliate accounts to supplement this.

Getting Readers From Your Feed To Your Blog

If you are using FeedBurner to run your RSS feeds, it will have a feature called FeedFlare. FeedFlare has a plethora of options to play with however the one we want shows the comment count at the end of each post. Of course, many readers love to read through the comments posted on articles to see what fellow readers have to say. However, they will not be able to view the comments from the RSS post unless they are subscribed to the comment RSS as well. This will force the reader to pay the blog a visit if they wish to read the comments.

Of course, you must encourage comments on your articles to get that comment count higher. This plays on human curiosity to see what is being said in order to draw them to the blog. Read my earlier post on attracting comments to your blog articles. You can even make some aliases and post some comments yourself to get the ball rolling!

Reminding readers that RSS posts are not real time also creates the urgency for them to still check your website for new or updated content.

Linking to old posts like I just did above will entice RSS readers to click on the link which will take them to the linked post in your blog. It also draws more attention to earlier blog articles that your newer readers may have not seen and aids search engines to index your older posts.

Embedding a video in lieu of photos will also help to draw in RSS readers. Since they are not able to play videos in RSS, they will have no other choice than to visit your blog. For this to be successful though you must post the video with an enticing description that will lure in the readers, not to mention, if you do not write anything they will simply see a blank post.

Tips To Gain More RSS Subscribers

Make Your RSS Icon As Large And Visible As Possible – If it looks nice, big and fruity people are more willing to click on it. Just as how I have mine in the top right hand corner, you cannot miss it at all!

Offer A Full Feed – Don’t try to tease your RSS readers with half posts in order to try and get them to click to your blog to read more. This will likely just scare RSS subscribers away.

Do NOT Show Your RSS Count When It’s Tiny – People do not like to be the first one to do anything by nature especially when subscribing to a blog with 2 readers. FeedBurner provides a chicklet that shows this count however I would not use it until my feed reaches at least 100 RSS subscribers.

Ask Your Readers To Subscribe – At the bottom of each post you make, just ad a small image or piece of text that says “If you enjoyed reading my article, please consider subscribing to my full RSS feed”. You could also edit your single.php file for it to automatically come up in every post you make to save you the time and effort of doing it.

Benefits of Having Many RSS Subscribers

The first and largest benefit in my opinion is that the number of RSS readers you have reflects the true growth of your blog. The reason why is because RSS readers are loyal people. People who really want to follow your writing. Secondly, some product review sites such as ReviewMe factor in your RSS count when calculating your review price. The greater your count the more you get paid from them.

I have just started this blog (my second one) only 8 days ago. Although it does not have many visitors yet since it’s not even close to being indexed by all of the major search engines, it still needs better interactivity. So I thought it would be a good idea to download wordpress plugins that reward my readers for commenting.

While searching through the Wordpress repository, I found two plugins that would do this. The first was called Top Commentators and you can see it over in my sidebar. What it does is display the hyperlinked names of the people who like to comment the most on my blog articles. What is the advantage of this you ask? Well the plugin lets me choose if I want their linked name to have a “No Follow” tag attached to it or not. A “No Follow” tag, for those of you who don’t know, is a piece of code within the hyper link that tells a search engine like Google when indexing the site it’s on not to follow the link to the pertaining website. By not following the link, the website to which that hyperlink is linked to does not get credit as a back link from Google. That website also does not get the “Google juice” from the website it’s linked on which would be a shame especially if that website has a higher Google page rank. So not only do my Top Commentators now get a search engine followed link, they also get their hyperlinked name placed in a more prominent position on my blog rather way down below a posting.

The second plugin I found was called JR_Follow. This allows you to disable the “No Follow” tag on your readers’ names in the comments section. So now everyone who posts gets a little bit of credit at the end of the day! Since a blog is not serious journalism, it’s important to promote a community-like feel and encourage people to speak their minds on your articles.
