Huge Lenin and Mao Statue In Richmond BC Canada

I’m not usually one to get into the mix of the complicated political world and what it stands for. However this is truly going over the edge in my opinion and is an atrocity to our city. A giant bust of Vladimir Lenin and Chairman Mao Zedong has no right being in our democratic country.

As you may know, Vancouver is hosting the 2010 winter Olympics and this tasteless statue has been erected very near to the Richmond speed skating Olympic oval. It features a giant chrome bust (head) of tyrant Vladimir Lenin with a smaller lady-boy statue of Mao Zedong standing on top.

I was driving by one day and almost crashed my car because this giant 17 meter display of communism scared the daylights out of me. I wasn’t aware that I was living in Mother Russia. If I had wanted that, I would’ve moved there. I really don’t appreciate the Gao brothers (the two “artists” who designed this) bringing this massacre into my home country where I have lived in peace all of my life. Their statue represents everything opposite of what I have experienced here in Canada. It represents fear, genocide, deception and suppression.

Some people claim it as just being art. Stop making excuses. This is NOT art! Take a look at the other so called “art” made by the Gao brothers.

Yes, they also did this. A bunch of Mao statues executing Christ.

For those of you not familiar with what Bolshevik leader Vladimir Lenin and Chinese Communist leader Mao Zedong and Communism in general have done, here are some figures:

The Soviet Front (1917-1953)

  • Death total for the Soviet Union between 1917-1953 (excluding WWII deaths) – 54 million
  • Deaths directly attributed to Lenin whose face is so stoically displayed – 3 to 5 million in Russian Civil War plus the Volga Famine (the first genocidal policy of the USSR to be enacted upon the Ukrainians- the next would be in 1932-33  killing 8 million of them) not to mention his political terror that killed another 100,000 dissidents
  • Whether or not Lenin was guilty of the actions by Stalin that killed 50 million more later on is your decision, but this guy has the blood of at least~4 million on his hands.

Mao Zedong’s regime (1949-1975): 40 000 000

  • Rural purges, 1946-49: 2-5M deaths
  • Urban purges, 1950-57: 1M
  • Great Leap Forward: 20-43M
  • Cultural Revolution: 2-7M
  • Labor Camps: 20M
  • Tibet: 0.6-1.2M
  • TOTAL: 44.5 to 72M

The numbers are there. You do the math. This statue disgusts me and should not be here for any reason – especially not while Vancouver becomes an international spectacle during the Olympics. While this statue may have some meaning for some people, it has absolutely nothing to do with Canada or Vancouver. Please take this monstrous thing down before you scare everyone away! I wonder what Vancouver’s tourism board thinks.
